Plane plunges into river near Downtown Island Airport in South Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A small plane crashed at the Downtown Island Airport in South Knoxville on Sunday, according to Knoxville Fire Captain D.J. Corcoran.

Crews with the Knoxville Fire Department were dispatched to the scene at 9:15 p.m. Sunday for a report of a small single engine aircraft crash.

Captain Corcoran said the 66-year-old pilot's cirrus SR 22 single engine aircraft went off the runway, and its nose is in the water.

Investigators said the pilot was not injured. The man refused treatment and transport to a hospital

Authorities said the pilot was taken to his home in Knoxville.
