Canadian man arrested for internet fraud targeting elderly victim


GATLINBURG, Tenn.—A coordinated investigation by the Gatlinburg Police Department and the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and Narcotics Organized & Violent Crimes Apprehension (NOVA) Unit has led to the arrests of a Canadian national accused of defrauding an elderly resident out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On Wednesday, August 27, authorities apprehended Yin Yiin Cheng, 31, of Burnaby, British Columbia, on charges including fraud, theft, and financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult.

“This arrest is the result of quick action and strong collaboration between local law enforcement agencies,” Gatlinburg Police Chief Ronnie Barrett said. “Scammers who prey on the elderly exploit trust and we are committed to protecting our community from these crimes. We encourage residents to remain vigilant, verify unsolicited financial offers, and contact authorities whenever something feels suspicious.”

The investigation began on Monday, August 25, when the Gatlinburg Police Department received a report of possible internet fraud involving an elderly resident. The victim was initially contacted via Facebook in early July and was persuaded to invest in what was presented as a legitimate investment opportunity. After making an initial investment in the form of a $2,000, the victim’s was urged to provide further money to grow the investment. During an in-person meeting on July 21, the victim gave individuals who identified themselves as communications staff of the purported investment firm, $200,000 in cash.

After adding the cash to the initial investment, the victim’s investment shortly reached $1,300,000. However, when the victim attempted to withdraw the funds, he was told an additional $280,000 in taxes were required.

Recognizing potential fraud, the victim contacted the Gatlinburg Police Department on Monday, August 25 when it was disclosed there was a scheduled meeting with the purported investment firm the following day. The victim was prepared to pay the individuals the taxes during this meeting.

Cheng was taken into custody on August 27 following an investigation. Mr. Cheng’s vehicle and its contents have been seized as evidence and are awaiting signed search warrants to examine.
