Walk into Yassin’s Falafel House in downtown Knoxville, and the first thing that hits may be the smell of chicken cooking in the kitchen or the sight of the incredible baklava.

But while the food is fantastic, it’s the welcoming environment that sets Yassin’s apart.

So much so that Reader’s Digest named it the Nicest Place in America.

“I’m not here just to make falafel and make money,”
said own Yassin Terou to Reader’s Digest.
“I’m here to build this community.”

The community Terou has built is now gaining national recognition. He and his family were featured on Good Morning America Thursday, along with a visit from star television personality, Robin Roberts.

“The overall values of our community is that we’re welcoming,”
Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero told Reader’s Digest.
“There’s a culture of volunteering and giving back.”

The Syrian refugee who came to Knoxville in 2011 has built such a reputation that his loyal following has justified building a second location off Cedar Bluff.
