THP rolls out low-profile 'ghost stripe' vehicles

Some Tennesseans might not see the trooper coming until the lights are behind them the next time they get a speeding ticket.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol announced it has rolled out 'ghost stripe' cruisers which are significantly more difficult to pick out on the highway from other vehicles.

Select state trooper vehicles set aside for aggressive driver enforcement have ditched the traditional beige, yellow and black color scheme for a low-profile all-black look.

The flashing lights are also installed in more subtle locations on the vehicle, making it difficult to distinguish from a personal vehicle head-on at first glance.

The THP markings are still there, but are semi-transparent and incredibly tough to spot from a distance.

THP did not mention the precise details of the markings, but it reacts to bright lights to become clearly visible. Many highway patrol agencies such as the N.C. Highway Patrol have opted for 'glow-in-the-dark' markings.

"We are always looking for new and innovative ways to promote traffic safety. Our goal is to influence and change bad driving habits,"
THP said.
"That is why we have implemented “Ghost Stripes” on a select few aggressive driver enforcement vehicles. Drive safely Tennessee."
