KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - More than 800 Knox County athletes showed off their skills Monday morning in the Special Olympics track and field competition.

The event continues Tuesday at Hardin Valley Academy. Kids compete in the morning and the adults in the afternoon.

The event is a way to celebrate differences and individual strengths.

"It's amazing to watch. These athletes put in so much hard work throughout the year for this event and to get ready for everything, so watching them compete just like anyone else is really awesome to see and how much fun they're having. Good times and laughs,"
said senior Luke Defur.

Special Olympics of Greater Knoxville has several events like this year-round, including everything from basketball and volleyball to ice skating and skiing.
