MARYVILLE, TN – In June 2019, Maryville welcomed a new restaurant, Amici, that created a buzz across the region’s culinary scene. Blount County native Christopher Thompson, owner and head chef, gives credit to Blount County’s thriving community.

Those who have traveled to Italy will know the traditional fare in the country is not what’s typically served in the United States. In Italy, the dishes that have been passed through generations are almost simplistic by using fresh, local ingredients. That’s what Thompson discovered when his family lived in a German city close to the border of the Tuscan country.

Back in the U.S., Thompson has spent his career working and training in some of the best restaurants throughout the region to gain the experience he needed to open his own when the moment arose.

When Foothills Milling Company decided to close its bakery’s doors, Thompson knew it was time to combine his skills, experiences and networks to create a new dining concept not yet seen in Blount County.

Choosing to create fresh pastas and pizzas from scratch, Thompson began work on creating a menu that combines the traditional Italian cooking techniques with local, southern ingredients. Calling upon past colleagues in the industry to help him bring his concept to life, Thompson settled on “Amici,” meaning “friends,” as the name of his restaurant.

Starting with fast-casual dining service, Amici has grown over the past six months to a full-service dining experience. Thompson wants it to be a gathering place for families and large groups to come, dine and create life-long memories. With the menu changing daily, based on what’s in season, diners have the chance the experience something new with each visit.

Amici is making strides to become an essential member and ally of the Blount County community. The herbs the restaurant uses are grown by an organization that employs farmers with special needs.

Amici has also made a quite the buzz around the region, bringing diners in from Knoxville and other surrounding cities to discover Blount County’s revitalization and growth.
