SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Sevier County leaders said leaders from the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians expressed interest in a possible land purchase near Smokies Stadium.

WVLT News report the tribe approved purchasing 122 acres at the 407 interchange off of Interstate 40 behind Smokies Stadium.

Neighbors expressed concerns over the possible development with many worried about a potential increase in traffic and noise near their communities.

It's not yet clear what the land would be used for, but officials said the sale of the property would be in the millions.

Principal Chief Richard Sneed, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, said,

“The EBCI Tribal Council has approved a resolution to authorize the EBCI to purchase property in Sevierville, TN. This property, if purchased, will be utilized for future economic development for the EBCI. The location of the property lends itself to many possibilities for economic diversification for the Eastern Band, and I am excited about this opportunity.”

The City of Sevierville said they have spoken with tribal leaders, but those talks were not about any specific development.

A current bill in the Tennessee legislature would allow for casino gaming if passed.
