NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Both chambers of the Tennessee General assembly voted to approve a so-called "trigger law" that would outlaw all abortions in Tennessee if the supreme court rules to overturn Roe v. Wade.

No exceptions are provided by the bill for victims of rape or incest. The only abortion that would be legal in the state would be allowed in circumstances involving

"substantial and irreversible impairment of major bodily function."

If the law were to take effect, doctors who perform abortions in Tennessee would face prosecution, but women would not.

The bill will now head to Governor Bill Lee's desk for his signature.

Roe V. Wade was a landmark decision issued by the Supreme Court in 1973 that now protects women's right to have an abortion if they choose.
